Passport Travel

Last summer, I traveled to China for what was supposed to be a quiet, educational visit. My plan was simple: visit the Great Wall, try some authentic Chinese cuisine, and maybe pick up a few Mandarin phrases. But things took a wild turn in Beijing.

It all started at a traditional tea house in the city. I was trying to order jasmine tea but apparently said something that sounded like a famous Chinese proverb. Everyone around me gasped and clapped, thinking I was some foreign scholar who had mastered ancient Chinese philosophy. The owner of the tea house offered me a free tea ceremony, and someone even asked for a selfie.

The next day, a clip of me went viral on Douyin (China’s version of TikTok) with the caption: “Wise African Tourist Quotes Laozi in Perfect Mandarin.” People started recognizing me on the street, asking for photos, and calling me “The Tea Philosopher.”

Things escalated quickly. I got invited to a local TV talk show where I had to explain the “deep meaning” behind the proverb I accidentally muttered. I just nodded and smiled a lot while the translator turned my basic English into something poetic. By the time I left China, I had over 300,000 followers on Weibo!

To this day, I still get messages from people in China asking when I’ll return to “inspire their spirits with ancient wisdom.” All from a simple cup of tea gone wrong.
